Earth Luck (地运, dì yùn) is the second of The Three Lucks: the fortune that comes from your environment — where you live, the orientation and layout of your home, and how you position yourself in physical space. Unlike Heaven Luck, which is fixed at birth, Earth Luck is adjustable, which is what makes it the object of active practice.
What shapes it
Earth Luck is the domain of Feng Shui (风水, literally “wind-water”), the art of arranging surroundings to be in harmony with the flow of qi (气, vital energy). Orientation of a building, placement of doors and rooms, the surrounding landscape of hills and water — all are read as either supporting or obstructing the fortune of those who live there.
Why it gets so much attention
Of The Three Lucks, Earth Luck occupies a peculiar sweet spot: it is consequential yet malleable. You cannot rewrite Heaven Luck, and improving Human Luck demands sustained change in character and conduct, which is slow. Earth Luck, by contrast, can be adjusted by rearranging the world around you — moving house, reorienting a desk, changing a layout. This ratio of leverage to effort is why feng shui became a mass practice while the other two lucks stayed more contemplative.
The classical maxim ranks it in the middle for exactly this reason: 地利 (dì lì, “the advantages of Earth”) outweighs favourable timing but is itself outweighed by human harmony. Good ground helps, but it does not play the game for you.
