Heaven Luck (天运, tiān yùn, sometimes 天命 tiān mìng, “the Mandate of Heaven”) is the first of The Three Lucks: the portion of fortune fixed at birth. It is the hand you are dealt — your birth moment, your innate constitution, the family, era, and circumstances you arrive into. Of the three lucks, it is the one outside your control.

Heaven Luck is the domain of BaZi (八字, “Eight Characters,” also called the Four Pillars of Destiny). BaZi maps a person’s fate from the year, month, day, and hour of birth — each expressed as a pair of characters, giving eight in total — to describe innate tendencies, strengths, and the shape of one’s fortune over time. Like Western Astrology, it is a system for reading a fixed input rather than changing it.
The point of an uncontrollable luck
It is tempting to dismiss a fate you cannot alter as useless knowledge. The tradition’s answer is that knowing the hand is what lets you play it well. Heaven Luck sets the terrain of a life; Earth Luck and Human Luck are the moves made across that terrain. Accurately reading what is fixed is what keeps effort from being wasted fighting the unchangeable — and directs it toward the two levers that do respond.
This is the same asymmetry that makes acceptance a precondition for agency rather than its opposite: you cannot optimise the controllable factors until you have honestly assessed the one you cannot.
